Safety Tips for Traveling on Thanksgiving Day

November 23, 2017

Reports from the National Safety Council (NSC) indicate that Thanksgiving is one of the deadliest holidays for motorists on US roads. That’s because many people travel during Thanksgiving weekend and go to family gatherings. Crowded roads mean a sharp rise in the total number of motor vehicle accidents, especially in New Jersey where roadways are already congested.

Here are some tips to ensure that you and your loved ones arrive safely at your destination this Thanksgiving:

  • Check out the car. Proper car maintenance is vital, especially if you are planning to travel over Thanksgiving weekend. Check out the fluids, tire pressures, and windshield wipers on your car and consider taking the vehicle to a mechanic for a more thorough check-up.
  • Use GPS tracking. You do not want to get lost in the middle of nowhere while traveling, especially if you are going somewhere you’ve never been before. A good way to ensure that you will be able to find gas stations and rest stops along the way is to bring a portable GPS navigation system with you.
  • Pack snacks for the kids. If you are traveling with kids over Thanksgiving weekend, you will probably want to make sure that they don’t become anxious during the long drive. Consider bringing snacks and water for them, as well as games and music.
  • Pay attention to the road. Keep your eyes on the roadway while driving in order to avoid a distracted driving accident. This means refraining from the use of electronic devices while driving.
  • Use a designated driver. Wine or other types of alcohol may be consumed at Thanksgiving gatherings. If you are planning to drink a can of beer or a glass of wine at Thanksgiving dinner this year, make sure that you have a designated driver for the trip home.
  • Wear seat belts. Even if a seat belt might become a bit uncomfortable after several hours of driving, it is important to buckle up at all times while in a moving vehicle.
